The Mourning Glories.
Are a Netherlands based trio, with members from Canada, France and The United States. Their distinctive style is graced by intricate, three-part ‘Boswellian’-style vocal harmonies but, unlike the Boswell Sisters’ often bright-eyed and bubbly delivery of the 20’s and 30’s, these gals convey a hushed defiance, a knowing lilt. Their individual roles within the group are wonderfully undefinied, exchanging instruments and hardware amongst themselves throughout a performance as well as often taking turns at the soprano-, alto- and baritone vocal parts. Accompanying themselves on Banjo, Ukulele, Mandolin, Washtub Bass, Washboard and Singing Saw, their voices entwine to narrate hair- raising tales of lamentation, shout revelatory spirituals towards the heavens above and even fearlessly revive the much-neglected tradition of western yodeling. A most particular and noteworthy group of ladies worth listening to and watching closely.
